My first carer role

Clothes in a washing machine
This past week, I’ve had my first experience of caring for someone – a family member recovering from a pretty major op.

It’s brought a few things home.

🚨🚨CLICHÉ ALERT🚨🚨

People who choose caring as a career are special. It’s been said so many times it’s boring. But I’m still putting it as the first and most important point.

🧠 Brain overload

If someone is caring for a loved one, their cognitive load is likely to be at about 100,000%.

I know this at an intellectual level, but it’s only once you’re in that place that you really appreciate how it feels. This is helpful for me to remember, when thinking about things like:

  • Can this wording or design be clearer?
  • Can we give people more ways to get in touch, particularly evenings and weekends?

😈 Job app hell

A lot of your job candidates are already in a care role that’s demanding.

So why are we asking them to jump through hoops in the job application process? Can we make that first step easier, so they only need to invest a lot of time once they know they’re likely to be a good fit?

These are just reminders. But we all need reminders, right?

My final point has nothing to do with marketing or business

Caring for someone can be a healthy reminder of how much you love them.
